10 Tips for Camera-shy and Awkward Couples
Valentine’s Day is coming up FAST, and I’m sure there are some couples out there who have a romantic session booked but are getting a little nervous. The idea of a couples session and being romantic or intimate in front of the camera can be extremely daunting. Trust me, I know, I have a very camera-shy partner.
Maybe you’ve never had your photo taken before, or maybe you aren’t the biggest fan of being in front of the camera. Whatever the case may be, let me be your guide. These sessions are meant to be fun and help you connect more with your partner, and there’s no reason to sweat it.
1. Focus on your partner
One way to take the nerves out of your session is to simply focus on your loved one. Don’t think about the camera... what camera... just look at them and be with them in the moment. Think of this as any other date night with the one you love, and concentrate on just spending time with them. When you relax with your person, your love will really shine through, I promise.
2. Hire a photographer you trust
We talk a lot about this here at Sydney Rose Portraits. It’s so important to pick someone you feel comfortable around to help you open up in front of the camera. When someone you feel at ease around is your photographer, you feel safe to be yourself and express your love. And when you don’t know what to do in front of the camera, someone you trust can help you overcome camera shyness with the posing prompts they know will be right for you.
3. Date night
One way to get in a lovey mood and be camera-ready is to have a date night before or after your session. When you and your partner are already connecting in a romantic way, you’ll be better prepared to do the same thing in front of the camera. Plus, who doesn’t want a nice dinner at your favorite place?!
4. Comparison is out
There’s no way to kill your joy like comparing yourself to others. Remember that everyone is different and takes a different approach to having their photos taken. Whatever works for you is best for you. Don’t spend hours scrolling through Pinterest if it means you’re going to feel bad about not looking exactly like that model couple. It’s just not worth it.
5. Treat yourself
Before your session, do whatever makes you feel most confident. Start feeling good and confident in yourself beforehand whether it be by treating yourself to a new outfit or a manicure or getting your makeup done. If you’re in the Augusta, GA area, my favorite makeup artist is Karrie Lykins MUA. She’s amazing at pampering and making you feel like your confident self!
6. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself
The photos you take are going to be amazing regardless of how camera-shy you are. And with a photographer you trust, you can take things as slow as you need to. Don’t get in your head by putting too much pressure on yourself to be perfect at this, especially if it’s your first couples session! Remember; You’re not alone. Everyone feels self-conscious sometimes, and there’s no reason to stress!
7. Communication is key
Building good communication skills between yourself and your partner, and you and your photographer is a great way to lower stress and overcome camera shyness. When you feel heard, and like you can speak up, you’ll get a lot more comfortable in front of the camera.
8. Movement is Your Best Friend
If standing still makes you feel awkward, don’t worry! We’ll add some movement to keep things feeling natural—like twirling, dancing, or walking together. Movement creates beautiful, effortless images and leads to beautiful candids!
9. Choose a Location That Feels Like You
The best photos happen when you feel comfortable in your surroundings. Whether it’s a quiet park, a dreamy beach, or even your favorite coffee shop, picking a place that feels special to you will help ease the nerves.
10. Bring a Small Personal Touch
Bringing something meaningful—like a blanket to sit on, your favorite coffee mugs, or even a bottle of champagne to pop—adds personality to your session. Little details make your photos feel even more you!
