What to Wear for your Session

“What should I wear?” This is probably one of the questions I get asked by clients the most. And it’s an important one! You’re paying good money to have your photos taken, either solo or with the one you love, and you deserve to look and feel your best, which brings me to my first tip.

Wear something *you* feel comfortable in

You look your best when you feel your best. If you’re wearing a dress that’s causing you to fidget with the hemline or readjust the straps constantly, you won’t be able to focus on taking the best photos possible and being present. I always tell my seniors, especially guys, not to get a new haircut right before their photoshoot.

This can apply to fashion, too. While a photoshoot is a great excuse to treat yourself to a shopping spree and buy that new top you’ve had your eye on, make sure when you look in the mirror you love it and don’t mind moving around in it. Sometimes, tried and true is best.

Coordinate with your other half

I’m not asking you to show up in matching flannels or sweaters (though you’re welcome to, if you so desire), but I am advising you to take a look at each others’ outfits and get ready together. Couples photos always turn out the best when the looks are coordinated and when the colors of your outfits don’t clash! You’re gonna be all snuggled up, so make sure your looks don’t butt heads. Recently, I shot a gorgeous new couple of mine, and they both wore white tops. Their photos turned out so gorgeous, and they complimented each other perfectly. White is a popular choice with couples, and I highly recommend it since we usually shoot outdoors, and it can help add to the light, airy vibes of you and your partner’s section.

Don’t be afraid to wear something that represents *you*

I touched on this in my seniors blog as well, but I absolutely adore it when seniors bring an extra outfit that’s not as “traditional” as a white dress or button-down. Please, please, please don’t be afraid to branch out and wear your heart on your sleeve. If you have an orange dress you wore to every gameday, we’re taking photos in it. Have a styled top with a tiger on it that you want to get some more use out of? Hell yeah! Guys, if you have a favorite jersey, bring it!

Don’t forget that your senior headshots are about you, so let your unique style show in them. You can even leave the orange and purple realm. If you have club tassels, an honors store, or any extra graduation accouterments, wear them during our session and let your true colors shine.

This advice goes for couples too. I’m here to photograph you. Bring on the quirky sweaters, the funky shirts (as long as they don’t clash), and the eccentric jewelry. All are welcome when I’m behind the camera.

Wear something you can move in

Your photoshoot is not meant to be a workout, so you don’t need to dress for a marathon, but there may be some walking between locations and movement between poses. When picking out an outfit, practice sitting and standing in it before our session. Make sure your clothes don’t restrict your movement, and, if we’re shooting in the heat, aren’t too heavy. The last thing I want is for you to miss out on the perfect shot because of a wardrobe malfunction!

I can’t wait to see what outfits you rock at your session and what we create together.
